Victor Lindelof banned from Manchester United’s Champions League match against Atalanta…

  • Victor Lindelof played as part of a back-three in the win against Tottenham
  • But he won’t be available against Atalanta after he takes a knock on training
  • Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could be tempted to change formation as a result
  • However, Paul Pogba, Amad Diallo and Anthony Martial are all on the plane

Manchester United have suffered another defensive injury this season after Victor Lindelof was ruled out of their crucial Champions League clash against Atalanta on Tuesday.

The club confirmed that the Swedish international – who was part of the back three who started Saturday’s 3-0 win over Tottenham – has not traveled to Italy after being hit in training on Monday.

It comes as a blow to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, but hasn’t led to the full-blown crisis United would have faced had he sustained the injury while Harry Maguire and Raphael Varane – his centre-backs at the weekend – weren’t there yet.

But the injury of the 27-year-old Swede – who has played the full 90 minutes in all three of United’s European games this season – could force Solskjaer to change his system again in the back, although Eric Bailly is a similar player. -for-as replacement.

Meanwhile, Paul Pogba will be available for Solskjaer as his three-match suspension following his 5-0 sack by Liverpool only applies to domestic competitions.

Amad Diallo is also on the plane for the game against his former club, while fellow forward Anthony Martial is also in the 25-man roster.

United have eased the pressure on bemoaned boss Solskjaer slightly this weekend with their win in north London, and will now look to take another step towards qualifying for the Champions League last 16 at Bergamo.

But Solskjaer warned his Manchester United players that ‘one swallow doesn’t make a summer’ as they try to build on the morale victory over Tottenham.

“The next one is the one that matters and we’ve been looking and working to get consistency,” he said.

“We know that if we get that consistency, we get good results and performance.

“Like I said, one swallow doesn’t make a summer and it’s important that we continue to focus on what we did well in that game and improve on what we did less well.

The Norwegian side currently tops Group F and has endured a turbulent ride on the continent so far this season.

Their only outing in Europe in 2021-22 ended in a shocking defeat to Young Boys, before Cristiano Ronaldo-inspired comebacks saw them come from behind to beat both Villarreal and Atalanta.
