VFX vet Tim McGovern receives the Visual Effects Society Founders Award

Tim McGovern, an Oscar winner for VFX in the 1990s Total recall and a founding member of the Visual Effects Society, will receive the VES Founders Award at a ceremony in October. Also at the event, a lifetime VES membership will be awarded to McGovern, archivist and curator Sandra Joy Aguilar, producer and AMPAS Governor Brooke Breton, and VFX artist agent and exec Bob Coleman.

A digital effects pioneer, McGovern is a founding member of Sony Pictures ImageWorks and now works at DNEG Mumbai, while also serving as Chief Creative Officer at Whisper Pictures, a development and production company focused on animated family films. He has served on the VES Board for nearly 20 years, including Vice Chairman of the Board and founding member of the VES Awards Committee.

Aguilar currently oversees metadata and indexing at the Shoah Foundation at the University of Southern California – the Institute for Visual History and Education. She is also an advisor to the upcoming VES Roth Museum of Visual Effects and a member of the Motion Picture Academy Science and Technology Council’s technical history subcommittee.

During her career, Breton helped launch VFX company Digital Domain where she served as senior vice president of production. Most recently she was a producer for the Academy Museum, where she focused on modern film techniques and acquisitions. She also chairs the Academy’s Education and Outreach Committee.

Coleman founded Digital Artists Agency to represent VFX artists; and held senior leadership roles at companies such as Lucas Arts, Skywalker Sound and Virgin Digital Studios entities 525 and Virgin Television de Mexico. He has been a member of the board and the prize committee of the VES for many years and was chairman of the prizes for nine years.
