Channel Seven news presenter Michael Usher has resigned from The Latest as production moves from Sydney.

The veteran journalist, who has been the face of the show since its inception in 2018, will step down from his role with the show.

The change, which will occur in March, is aimed at “optimizing efficiency” within the network, according to a Seven spokesperson.

Despite the geographic transition, the network assures that “the format, production quality and integrity of The Latest will remain unchanged,” giving viewers the same level of news coverage they expect.

Usher, a respected figure in Australian journalism, has been a key part of the show’s success, frequently presenting around 10:30pm and, more recently, sharing presenting duties with Angela Cox on alternate weekday nights.

Speaking ahead of publication, Usher said: ‘The big point of difference with The Latest is that its content is made up exclusively of interviews and crossovers.

‘We do not publish journalistic articles. I like to think that our audience has been at full speed all day and all night, and we can help them catch up on the news of the day and give them a taste of what’s brewing in the morning, so they can go to the bed quickly.

‘I also always try to end The Latest on a positive note. A picture of uplifting thoughts before the day ends.’

The former Channel Nine presenter was poached by Channel Seven in 2016 after Melissa Doyle announced her departure from the network.
