The 43-year-old hasn’t reached the second round of her Grand Slam on home soil since 2019 and Williams now faces a tough task to enjoy an extended run at Flushing Meadows.

Meanwhile, Coco Gauff, the No. 6 seed who arrives in New York with high hopes of glory, will face a first-round qualifier.
