Vegan parents who have nutrient starved their baby so badly that the child suffered brain damage have avoided prison.

The one-year-old girl from Victoria was put on a strict plant-based diet, which eventually landed her in the intensive care unit at the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne.

She was fed a homemade formula of coconut water and powders, which left her with cerebral palsy due to malnutrition in 2018.

In the County Court of Victoria on Monday, parents – 32 and 34 – were spared prison after being found guilty of negligent serious injury. news.com.au reported.

The baby was rushed to Geelong’s emergency department in August 2018, where doctors found widespread bruising, discolored skin, and rashes covering her body.

She also had multiple open wounds, was bleeding internally, and was kept alive by life-sustaining machines.

The child was in such bad shape that she had severe protein and calorie malnutrition known as Kwashiorkor – a condition that occurs in newborns in famine-faced countries.

A week before the girl’s father rushed her to the hospital, he wrote an email for advice to an herbal health club in the US.

‘[SIC] Hi, my 1 year old doesn’t want to drink / eat anymore and if she doesn’t lie down or she starts coughing. ‘

What can I do to help her keep it down and get her to drink? She has no temporary worker. She is on a fruit diet. Please help as soon as possible, ‘he wrote.

The consulate suggested giving the baby a ‘stomach tea’ instead of taking her to the hospital.

A week later, the child weighed 6.6 kg – four pounds less than the average weight. She fought for her life in the hospital for a month.

A nurse told the parents in an email that the coconut mixture was nutritionally insufficient for a baby.

Despite medical advice, the couple skipped appointments and turned to alternative medicine for help.

In a message the girl’s mother sent to her partner, she asked him to talk to the American group about their daughter’s “weight loss and limp body.”

County Court Judge Claire Quin previously condemned the parents’ behavior, especially their decision to ignore the advice of medical professionals.

“These parents, they weren’t 19 or 20 years old, they were in their early 30s,” Judge Quin said.

“They are told that what they are considering will not work for their child, but they will continue to do it.”

The couple has since divorced after having a second child together, and the father has given up on his vegan diet.

Judge Quin ordered them to issue a 12-month correction warrant and receive mental health treatment.

The girl, now three years old, lives with her mother who shows ‘dedication and devotion’ to the child and attends medical appointments.
