‘I feel like I’m a stranger to grief. As much as it has touched my life and the lives of so many people I love. It’s not something I’ve ever felt comfortable with or familiar with,” the announcement began on her Instagram page.
‘This last Sunday my father passed away. Since then I have encountered a variety of emotions, numbness, peace, complete udder sadness and even guilt at times.’
She warmly recalled: ‘My dad was everyone’s favourite, he was so lovely, he made everyone feel welcome and comfortable. We shared a love of dad jokes and he had an endless supply.’
Katie added: “He was always very supportive of my siblings and I growing up and, as adults, championed our efforts.”
She continued: ‘I can’t smell the Irish spring without immediately thinking of it, of how the smell almost covered the wheel grease smell of his work. It is a fundamental memory that I have always kept and that I now keep closer.”
His message concluded: ‘Dad, I will love you forever, thank you for the million laughs, for the father-daughter dances throughout life and for the love you gave us’, and movingly he said goodbye: ‘With love, your baby girl’ .
