A former Collingwood player has been charged over a crash that left two elderly women dead and a 12-year-old girl injured in Western Australia.

Emergency services were called after reports of an accident between two cars and a road train pulling two trailers on the Brand Highway at Cooljarloo, about 170 kilometers north of Perth, at around 9am on Friday. .

WA Police will allege Shannon John Cox, 38, was behind the wheel of a Toyota Prado traveling south when it collided with a Suzuki Ignis traveling north.

A white Volvo road train was also traveling northbound on the same road.

On Saturday, Cox was charged with two counts of dangerous driving causing death and remained in custody until his next court appearance on June 18.

Two women, the 82-year-old driver and her 83-year-old passenger, who were traveling in the hatchback, died at the scene. A 12-year-old girl was also injured.

Neither Cox nor the 31-year-old driver of the Volvo truck were injured.

Five St John ambulances and two RAC rescue helicopters were deployed to the scene, but the helicopters were later withdrawn and were not required to assist.

Cox, who lives in the Geraldton suburb of Spalding, appeared at Northbridge Magistrates Court in Perth on Saturday.

Major Crash investigators are seeking information from anyone who witnessed the crash.

Cox played 25 games for the Magpies before retiring in 2009.
