Val Kilmer’s kids provide an update on their father’s battle with cancer ahead of the documentary’s release
He is one of the most celebrated Hollywood actors of his generation and a documentary about his life and career is out this week.
And the children of Val Kilmer that Jack and Mercedes spoke to Additional on Wednesday to provide an update on their star father’s health as he is currently recovering from a long battle with throat cancer.
Of the 61-year-old Doors actor, Kilmer’s daughter Mercedes, 29, said, “He’s doing well… He’s still recovering… The recovery process is as debilitating as the actual illness.”

Son Jack, 26, added: ‘Everyone has been so helpful; it makes me emotional. It’s really nice to see people come together.’
The comments came ahead of the new documentary Fall on Amazon Prime on Friday.
The film explores Kilmer’s life and career and features many exclusive, never-before-seen footage, mostly shot by Val himself.

When asked how they feel watching archival videos of their father, Jack commented, “It’s emotional. It’s… it’s really fun.’ Mercedes added that ‘we were bursting’ [during] a lot of that.’
While preparing the retrospective film, the Paydirt actress said she knew their father had recorded and preserved hours of home video, explaining, “We were certainly aware of it, as we were the subject of a lot of it… most of it . We hadn’t seen much of it until this project started, so it was very exciting.’
As for the beginning of the project itself, Mercedes revealed: “He’s always had a need to document things… And then my father was diagnosed with cancer and they continued filming, and then they realized they were doing this.” archive, and that’s how the movie this movie came about. Kilmer shares his children with ex-wife Joanne Whalley, whom he met while working on the 1988 fantasy film Willow.
In January 2015, Val first dealt with what is believed to be a tumor in his throat, and in December 2017 it was revealed that he had battled throat cancer.
The Saint star has undergone multiple tracheotomies and now uses a feeding tube to eat.

In the trailer for the new film, Val can be heard saying, “I see myself as a sensitive, intelligent person…but with the soul of a clown.”
Mercedes commented: ‘It reminded me of the Mark Twain quote… My father did a play about Mark Twain… There is a quote in the Mark Twain movie where he says there is no laughter in heaven become… the sadness in life and how we can turn the hard times into something sublime [to] comical, and we can find the joy in life.
“My father looks a lot like a clown that way,” she continued. “He always elevates everyday moments of life in this elevated type of theatre.”

Jack lovingly added, “He’s just a monster of life and he loves life so much… He has to document everything because he is unstoppable.”
Both Jack and Mercedes attended the film’s premiere on Tuesday night in Los Angeles, California.
The documentary Val is now in theaters and debuting Friday on Amazon Prime.
