Fans were captivated when Val Kilmer and Tom Cruise shared the screen after 36 years together.

And as it turns out, the audience weren’t the only ones who had tears in their eyes at that reunion.

62-year-old actor Val spoke of his ‘very moving’ return in Top Gun: Maverick with the Los Angeles Times on Tuesday when it was revealed that there were no dry eyes on set when he filmed with 59-year-old Tom.

Movie magic happened when Captain Pete “Maverick” Mitchell (Cruise) and Admiral Tom “Iceman” Kazansky (Kilmer) meet as Iceman communicates via typed words on a screen, while the character has throat cancer, such as Val’s real diagnosis.

He uses his actual voice to communicate with his old friend at a time Kilmer described in the publication as, “Very personal and moving.”

About his friendship with Tom, Val said, “Tom and I get along very well. We giggled like little kids at school between takes. I consider him a true friend. We shared intimate stories and challenges about our different lifestyles!’

It definitely seemed to be a rollercoaster of emotions for the two A-listers as director Joseph Kosinski described a touching moment between the old friends.

The 48-year-old actor said: ‘After one of the shoots (we only did a few) I noticed that both Tom and Val had tears in their eyes. It felt like a real moment between two old friends.’

Kosinski added that the two stars helped each other improve their acting in a show of true spirit.

He said: “You have two masters at the top of their game playing the most iconic characters of their careers. I think there’s a lot of Maverick in Tom and Iceman in Val, so what you see on screen is an authentic friendship that’s been around for over 36 years.”

Their bond of filming the original 1986 Top Gun movie has continued through the decades.

Val said, “We talked quite a bit about what was best for the story and I think they got it right in the end.

‘We are in touch and we exchange Christmas gifts every year!’

Top Gun: Maverick opened at number one at the box office, earning a whopping $124 million dollars in the US. It is Tom Cruise’s highest-grossing film debut to date.

The action-adventure catapulted both stars to the stratosphere career-wise, so it only seemed right to include the enemies who became friends in the sequel.

The Batman star has had several health issues in the intervening time between the films.

In 2015, he was diagnosed with throat cancer and the resulting chemotherapy and multiple tracheostomies damaged his vocal cords.

This resulted in the former A-list actor speaking in a hoarse voice and sometimes having trouble communicating.
