Uvalde School District Police Chief Peter Arredondo was placed on administrative leave with immediate effect.

Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District Superintendent Dr. Hal Harrell announced the decision in a statement released Wednesday.

Harrell said he planned to wait for the investigation into the shooting to be completed on May 24, but due to “lack of clarity” or timeline from the authorities involved, he decided to put Arredondo on leave.

Harrell did not specify why he chose to put Arredondo on furlough, but the decision came as the police chief’s questionable decisions amid the mass shooting were re-examined during a Texas Senate hearing investigating the shootings.

He said Arredondo would be replaced by Lieutenant Mike Hernandez and that the school district would search for “qualified candidates” to join the police force for the upcoming school year.
