A Utah woman shared her survival story after going on a Tinder picnic with a man described as a “budding serial killer.”
Hadlie Monroe matched with Kane Fairbanks on the dating app and they talked for months before meeting in person.
After meeting his parents and niece on their first date two days earlier, Monroe said she felt comfortable with him for a second date in a secluded area of Mueller Park in Bountiful on May 12, 2022.
“It looked like a really nice area to have a picnic.” “It was like staying up until one, two or three in the morning just talking to him,” Monroe said. ksl.
But the date took a dark turn when Fairbanks forced her into his car around 6:30 p.m. and began stabbing her, she reported. fox 13.

“I don’t remember getting back into the car. The only thing I remember is opening my eyes and seeing him on top of me with a knife at his throat,” he said.
Monroe was able to defend himself and escape from the car. He ran to a group of people nearby, including two nurses and a paramedic who were able to provide first aid until an ambulance arrived.
“I remember turning around and seeing him standing there, looking at me, covered in my blood,” she said. “I was so focused on myself and so angry that I had run away.”
Fairbank left the area and attacked a second victim at random. The second woman was also able to defend herself and witnesses helped provide first aid.
Eventually, a good Samaritan caught Fairbank and detained him until the police arrived and arrested him.
“I’ve tried and tried to review every interaction I’ve had with him to see if there’s anything I missed,” Monroe said.
Monroe was able to defend himself and escape from the car. He ran to a group of nearby people who were able to give him first aid.
“I think that’s what terrifies me, because he was so good at fooling me.”
Fairbank pleaded guilty to attempted aggravated murder and a reduced charge of attempted murder in January.
In June, he was sentenced to 15 years to life in prison on the first count and three years to life in prison on the second, with the sentences ordered to run consecutively.
During her victim impact statement, Monroe said she received 60 stitches in her face alone, staples in her head and stitches in her side.
Prosecutors called Fairbank “a serial killer in the making,” according to local media outlets.
Fairbank was recorded admitting that he planned to murder Monroe during his police interrogation.
“That’s why I bought Tinder,” he said. ‘I could tell she liked me and it would be easy to fool her. It’s kind of sexual.”
Disturbingly, his response when police asked him if he would do anything differently was: “I would buy a sharper knife.”
