Justin Trudeau’s ex-wife opened up about her mental health struggles yesterday, hours after the Canadian prime minister dramatically resigned as leader.
Sophie Gregoire Trudeau, 49, took to Instagram yesterday to share a post about her story from an account called @letstalk.mentalhealth.
The caption read: ‘My mental health really changed when I stopped asking myself, “Why am I so emotional?” Abd started asking, “What is my body trying to tell me right now?”. Read that again’.
The post was shared just six days after her ex-husband gave in to mounting pressure to resign.
In emotional remarks, Trudeau said: “Last night at dinner I told my children about the decision I am sharing with you today. I intend to resign as party leader, as prime minister.”
With his government in turmoil, a clearly dejected Trudeau, 53, said Parliament would be suspended until March 24 while his Liberal Party chooses a new leader.
The scion of one of Canada’s most famous political families had become deeply unpopular in recent years over a range of issues, including the rising costs of food and housing, and rising immigration.
Donald Trump has repeatedly mocked the Canadian leader by suggesting his country would be better off as the 51st US state.

Trudeau’s decision came after weeks of pressure from party colleagues amid a bitter division over how to handle relations with Trump in his second term.
Sophie has been open about her mental health struggles.
In her memoir “Closer Together,” Canada’s former first lady discussed her longtime advocacy for mental health care and her personal struggles with an eating disorder.
Speaking to the Washington Post’s Tara Pakrer-Pope last year about her book, Sophie said, “We didn’t come to this earth to be happy; we came here to be conscious. Because the brain is primitively wired to be in fear mode, watching out for danger and seeking comfort, as a survival mechanism, we therefore have to work hard to actually find a conscious way of living and being happy. .’
In the days leading up to Trudeau’s resignation, Sophie had shared photos of herself enjoying a ski vacation with their three children.
The glamorous former TV host hit the slopes of Red Mountain Resort and posted an Instagram video of her frolicking in the snow in the picturesque mountains of Rossland, Western Canada.
‘Born to ski!’ Gregoire said in a caption overlaying the dreamy video. ‘Red mountainsides, powder and people; you rock! Thanks for an epic time! RED CUTTING.’
Gregoire also wrote a lengthy caption detailing how she started skiing as a four-year-old when her father strapped plastic skis to her winter boots in Quebec.

Trudeau divorced his 18-year-old wife Sophie Gregoire Trudeau in August 2023
‘I fell flat on my face and got back up as he laughed so hard and gave me a taste of self-deprecation and perseverance! I have never stopped since,” she wrote.
‘The mountains, the sky, the wind (and yes, the cold!!!) are my friends and my path to freedom. I feel liberated and strong when I’m racing down slopes, whether it’s in deep, steep powder snow or going downhill at 80 km/h!
‘And now the ultimate dream is that my children can follow us everywhere! We can learn to test our bodies and minds early on in nature, wherever that is. Get outside for some fresh air…it’s medicine for the mind!’.
The outgoing Canadian prime minister and Gregoire announced their split in matching Instagram posts shared in August 2023 after 18 years of marriage.
His office also released a statement to confirm that they had reached a legal agreement and revealed that the couple will remain amicable and will soon vacation together with their three children.
The couple had been married since 2005 and have three children, the youngest of whom is nine.
Gregoire was a childhood friend and classmate of Trudeau’s older brother Michel, who died in an avalanche in 1998 at the age of 23.
They started dating in 2003 after reconnecting as adults, and were engaged shortly after.
Gregoire has found love again with pediatric surgeon Dr. Marcos Bettolli from Ottawa. The two were spotted leaving a fancy restaurant together just six months after her divorce from Trudeau.
