USMNT Roster Reveal Preview: Who’s Safe, Who’s Hopeful, Who’s Staying Home As Announcement Looms

The United States Men’s National Team will go to the FIFA World Cup after missing the 2018 edition.

The moment will be seen as the first opportunity for some of the most talented Americans to grace a football field for the world’s biggest stage.

But before the pressure of the cameras and the bright lights of Doha reach them, the cameras will focus their lenses on the Big Apple, where the US Soccer Federation will announce its roster for Qatar live on ESPN2.

This announcement comes days after Los Angeles FC lifted the MLS Cup for the first time in the franchise’s short history and as the Premier League comes to a halt.

We have seen a number of high-profile players such as Ben Chilwell, Timo Werner and Alphonso Davies suffer major injuries that can cause them to miss a significant amount of time. That could lead to them missing a few matches or the World Cup altogether.

Therefore, FIFA has ruled that, whether due to COVID-19 or injury, nations will be allowed to replace players up to 24 hours before their opening match.

Where previous tournaments have seen a maximum of 23 players on each team, it has been increased to 26 this year as well.

Is there a deadline for each team in the World Cup?

The 32 teams will have to reduce their squads to between 23 and 26 players before the World Cup.

Each coach must send their official team to FIFA before November 13, just one week before the tournament officially begins.

FIFA will announce the official team of each nation the following day.

Surprisingly, the deadline is the same day the Premier League officially comes to a halt, with the final game Fulham vs Manchester United at 4:30pm on November 13.

Of course, several teams, including Brazil, have already announced their rosters.

Who is definitely out of the USMNT?

After impressing the bosses in 2021, starting centre-back Miles Robinson has been out with injury since the summer. He will just miss Qatar while he rehabilitates and tries to get back on his feet and get healthy.

Furthermore, Crystal Palace central defender Chris Richards revealed that he has been injured and would also be absent from the World Cup.

Defender Sam Vines will also not be in the squad after breaking his leg at the weekend with his club Royal Antwerp.

Who’s still waiting for a spot?

There are some players that can be considered locks for the roster.

Christian Pulisic, Weston McKennie, Tyler Adams, Yunus Musah, Brenden Aaronson and Matt Turner are Americans playing abroad who should be considered safe.

As far as Americans in MLS likely to be on the team, Walker Zimmerman, Aaron Long, Kellyn Acosta and Jesus Ferreira are all at this level.

Some players would normally be considered locked out were it not for the injuries they are actively recovering from. Expect Sergino Dest, Antonee Robinson, Cameron Carter-Vickers and Timothy Weah to go to Qatar if they are fully healthy.

When it comes to players who are doing well enough to pull it off but might not be considered safe, Borussia Monchengladbach’s Joe Scally, Boavista’s Reggie Cannon, Middlesbrough’s Zack Steffen and Borussia Dortmund’s Giovanni Reyna are likely to get the call-up.

For MLS players ready to make it, look to Inter Miami’s DeAndre Yedlin and Seattle Sounders FC’s Jordan Morris.

Then, there’s the matter of filling out the rest of the team, and for that, we can turn to the reported leaks from the roster announcement.

In midfield, rumors have it that FC Dallas winger Paul Arriola will sit at home, while Berhalter will pick Seattle Sounders midfielder Cristian Roldan.

Instead, Berhalter will reportedly turn to Norwich City striker Josh Sargent and stick with favorite Ricardo Pepi from Groningen to finalize the list.

Sargent has only played 45 minutes for the USMNT so far this season, while Pepi hasn’t scored since October 2021.
