American teacher shares key differences she’s noticed about McDonald’s since moving to Australia — including the $1 items that don’t exist
An American teacher working in Sydney has revealed some of the key McDonald’s differences between Australia and her home country — including the $1 menu items that don’t exist Down Under and the different cup sizes.
American expatriate Kaymie Wuerfel – who moved from Florida to Sydney in early 2020 to be with her Australian husband – shared a viral TikTok video detailing the “culture shock” she experienced when ordering from the fast food restaurant.
One of the things she noticed was that McDonald’s Australia doesn’t offer $1 menu items, which usually include a cheeseburger, McChicken burger, coffee, or soda.
When an employee asked her if she wanted “chips” with her Cheeseburger and soda, Kaymie replied, “I’d rather have fries than a bag of chips.” Aussies generally use the term ‘chips’ to describe both chips and ‘chips’ in packs – a term more commonly used in the UK.
When she got her “large” Coke, Kaymie said she was confused by the cup size of her drink, which was almost the equivalent of America’s “medium.” In Australia, a large McDonald’s soft drink is 650 ml, while in America it is 887 ml.
She also remembered the first time she asked her husband if he wanted anything from “Micky D,” but soon learned that Aussies called the fast food chain “Maccas.”
Her video has since been viewed more than 515,000 times, with many Aussies pointing out that the McDonald’s Down Under actually has another menu, the “Loose Change,” which features $1 frozen Coke and $1 soft serve ice cream. The menu items also include $1.50 apple pie, $2 burger, $2 small fries, $3 small sundae, $4 Chicken ‘n’ Cheese burger, and $4 McFlurry.
“We have a Loose Change menu because because of the currency conversion most things cost $1.50 to $2 instead of the US$1,” one woman explained.
Other curious asked her ‘how big are big drinks in America?’ to which Kaymie replied, “Solid. To give you a comparison, our McDonald’s [medium] is bigger than the big one in Australia.’
Earlier this year, Kaymie explained why she thought Australian McDonald’s tasted better than the US, as the quality of the food Down Under was much better. “I’ve never eaten it much in America because when you eat McDonald’s in America, you really feel like you’re going to die,” she said. “And I know it probably isn’t much better here, but it’s so, so good. I eat those Chicken McPieces and drink my frozen Coke, the last thing on my mind is my health – which is probably a bad thing.’
Viewers agreed, with many suggesting that this could have to do with Australia’s premium ingredients, such as 100 percent Aussie chicken breast, grass-fed beef, or the oil chips and chicken nuggets fried in it.
