Benson Boone is the latest touring artist to try out Australia’s famous shoe-drinking game.
The 22-year-old hitmaker was on stage at Sydney’s Hordern Pavilion on Monday when he took a break between tunes to take part in the “tradition”.
Audience members erupted in cheers and groans as they watched the star drink from a large cowboy boot handed to him by a fan.
A video recorded by a concertgoer was later shared on TikTok in which Benson can be seen joking with the audience.
He deviated from the shoe tradition and used water from a bottle he had on stage instead of drinking beer from the shoe.
“When I was in Australia,” he joked before filling his shoe with water.

He then knelt down and was about to drink when he noticed something in the trunk.
“You have food in your shoe,” he told the boot’s owner.
After gulping down the water, Benson joked, “Not bad.”
However, many fans who commented on the action were not impressed.
“I was there and I cringed,” one fan complained.
“As a culture, we have to retire the shoe, please.”
Another user added: ‘I was there last night too. I shuddered.’
Shoey is one of Australia’s iconic traditions that also functions as a punishment for hazing or as a celebratory ritual.
It became increasingly popular thanks to famous athletes such as Formula One driver Daniel Ricciardo and UFC fighter Tai Tuivasa.

Shoey is one of Australia’s iconic traditions that also functions as a punishment for hazing or as a celebratory ritual.
It is the practice of pouring alcohol on a sweaty shoe and then rubbing it.
In the past, the tradition has come under attack when critics, including prominent Australian musicians, call for it to be banned.
Stars like Post Malone, Lizzo and Harry Styles have also famously done a shoey while touring Down Under.
‘My shoe? My shoe is disgusting. I can’t drink out of my damn shoe, what’s wrong with them?’ Lizzo told the crowd at her Sydney show in 2023.
“This is one of the most disgusting traditions I’ve ever witnessed,” Harry said, before taking a swig of his $1,170 Adidas x Gucci shoe.
‘I feel like a different person. “I feel ashamed of myself,” he said after Shoey.
‘It feels so personal. Such an intimate moment to share with so many people. I will discuss this at length with my therapist.
It is common for fans at concerts to sing ‘shoo-ey! Shoo-ey!’ in the hope that the artist will agree to participate in the tradition.
It comes after JoJo Siwa got into the party spirit when she took to the stage at a raucous Melbourne party for the last time following her split from dancer girlfriend Dakayla Wilson.
The American singer, 21, took to the stage for her only club performance during her visit to Australia and pulled out all the stops for her fans, including performing a shoey.
The Dance Moms star sent the crowd into a frenzy as she drank alcohol from her boot.
Footage shared on social media by Abbey Duckworth showed the star sticking her tongue out at the camera as she poured a can of drunk Box juice onto her shoe, before saying goodbye in one fell swoop.
