According to UCLA’s student newspaper, The Daily Bruin, Israel supporters attempted to tear down a pro-Palestinian protest camp on campus Tuesday night.

Security was beefed up after officials said there were “physical altercations” between factions of protesters at the camp that has been declared illegal by UCLA.

At least one person has been taken to hospital with injuries that are still unclear.

It comes as police respond to clashes involving pro-Palestinian protesters on college campuses across the United States over the past two weeks, which have seen more than 1,000 arrests.

Protesters use fireworks, traffic cones and a skateboard as weapons.

US media reported that protesters threw fireworks towards the pro-Palestinian camp while traffic cones, wooden pallets, a scooter and even a skateboard were used as weapons during the clashes.

Hostilities reportedly continued for nearly two hours before Los Angeles Police Department officers converged on a nearby parking lot.

Police vehicles could be seen nearby, but officers did not immediately intervene.

Images circulating on social media show fireworks at the camp, while one protester claimed he was pepper-sprayed amid the chaos.

Violence broke out at UCLA overnight between pro-Palestinian and pro-Israeli protesters.

Protesters, some armed with sticks, were seen pushing and kicking each other, while at one point a group piled on a person lying on the ground, kicking and punching him until others pulled him out of the scrum.

Vice Chancellor Mary Osako said in a statement

Horrible acts of violence occurred in the camp tonight and we immediately called the authorities for mutual support. Firefighters and medical personnel are at the scene. We are sickened by this senseless violence and it must end.

The clashes took place just outside a tent camp, where pro-Palestinian protesters set up barricades and plywood for protection, and counter-protesters attempted to tear them down. Police vehicles could be seen nearby, but officers did not immediately intervene.
