A group of US Army soldiers who had been deployed to the Middle East came to the rescue of a pregnant stray dog named Meatball, and are now seeking to bring the mother and her puppies back to the United States.
Soldiers discovered Meatball seeking refuge under a shipping container at her military base as she prepared to give birth to her pups.
Military personnel began caring for the dog by making sure she had enough food and water while she gave birth to eight cute puppies.
Just before the dog gave birth, an unexpected ice storm hit the area, filling her den with hail and mud.
Once again, the soldiers took it upon themselves to rescue Meatball and her cubs from the elements, placing her somewhere warm and out of harm’s way.

Caring for Meatball and her pups became a source of enjoyment and positivity for the soldiers during their long deployment away from home.
Many of the soldiers began to bond with the cubs as they dedicated themselves to caring for and protecting them.
The pups, by the way, were named Marco, Azura, Connie, Thresher, Jacky, Ricky-Bobby, Chico, and Bash.
United States Army Staff Sgt. Rickly and his comrades, who cared for the dogs when they were at their most vulnerable, seek to bring them back to the United States, where they will receive the care and love they deserve.
Sergeant Rickly shared his love for the animals and noted how they have brought him comfort.
“Looking from the outside you might think I saved these pups, but in so many ways the pups and Meatball saved me too,” Rickly wrote in a moving statement to Fox News.

Now, the soldiers who cared for the vulnerable dogs are determined to bring them back to the United States through a charity called Paws of War.

Caring for Meatball and her pups became a source of enjoyment and positivity for the soldiers on their long deployment away from home.
“When things at home got worse, I was sad to be so far away and it was hard to stay focused,” the soldier explained.
“Making it my mission to ensure… each of the pups has a loving forever home, and caring for them has brought me great comfort during difficult times.”
The soldier expressed his gratitude simply for the opportunity to ensure each pup finds a loving forever home.
Even getting philosophical about pets, Rickly believes that the animals were born under his watch for a reason.
The soldiers have now closed in on war legs – a charity that trains and provides shelter and support dogs to US military veterans suffering the emotional and physical effects of war.

Soldiers now fear for their future, particularly as dogs in the Middle East are often mistreated and viewed as pests.

The Paws of War organization acknowledged that without the intervention of the soldiers, the puppies would not have survived.

The Paws of War charity now hopes that Meatball and her pups can be safely brought to the US to live alongside veteran soldiers who will provide them with a loving home.

“Without the soldiers, Meatball’s babies would have died,” the organization confirmed. “And the heartbreaking reality is that when his heroes are gone, they won’t last long on their own.”

“What will happen to them next scares me if they can’t get to a safe place.”
“Since the day they were born, they have been cared for and they don’t know the suffering that awaits them if they have to fend for themselves,” said Sgt. Ricky said.

“The story of Meatball and her cubs is an example of how important these animals are to our active military and what a difference we can make to save the lives of those animals who become family to them,” said Robert Misseri, president of Paws of War.
“We are doing everything possible to ensure that this mission to bring them to the United States and return to the side of their soldiers has a happy ending.”
