Millions of Australians have been urged to prepare for extreme heatwave conditions in Queensland.

The “protect yourself” warning was issued by Queensland Health as the Bureau of Meteorology forecast extreme heat across much of the state on Wednesday.

The extreme heat was expected to pose health risks from Bribie Island, north of Brisbane, to Rainbow Beach near Gympie and parts of the Mackay and Isaac regions.

Additionally, areas stretching between the Gold Coast and Mackay, and inland to Longreach, are expected to be affected by severe heatwave conditions.

Longreach was expected to reach 43C on Wednesday. A high of 36C was forecast for Brisbane, while in Glatton, in the city’s west, the mercury was expected to hit 38C.

The extreme conditions are expected to continue through Friday.

“Make sure you know what to do when there is a heatwave warning in your area,” Queensland Health said in a statement on Tuesday night.

It also recommended measures to stay safe during extreme heat conditions.

Queensland Health said people should “try to be indoors during the hottest parts of the day, close windows and doors to keep the heat out (and) use air conditioning or fans if available.”

He also said that, if possible, strenuous activities should be avoided or reduced during the heat wave.

“If you must go out, protect yourself from the sun by wearing a hat, long sleeves and light clothing, seeking shade whenever possible and applying sunscreen every two hours.”

He also noted that people need to stay hydrated during extreme heat conditions.

It is recommended to drink between 6 and 8 glasses of water a day and avoid alcoholic, hot or sugary drinks, such as tea and coffee, as they can worsen dehydration.

“If you go out, take a bottle of water with you,” he said.

Queensland Health warned Australians that

Queensland Health has warned Australians to “protect themselves” as extreme heatwave conditions were expected on Wednesday.

The color of urine is a good guide to hydration, the health department said: It should be light to light straw in color.

Queensland Health also said it was vital we look after each other.

“Stay in touch with friends, neighbors and older relatives during a heat wave in case you or they need help (and) don’t leave children or pets in parked cars.”

Heat stress can cause a variety of health problems, including heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke.
