An urgent warning has been issued after tens of thousands of Australian babies have been infected with respiratory syncytial virus.

Moore said most children infected with RSV end up with a relatively mild case of infection, but for others it can be much more serious and, in rare cases, fatal.
“RSV primarily affects young children and infants, actually children under six months of age, who are most at risk for serious illness,” he said.
Western Australia, Queensland and New South Wales have implemented childhood RSV vaccination programs this year, but the other states and territories do not currently have access to the vaccine.

Those at increased risk of severe RSV infection include premature babies, Aboriginal people, and those with weakened immune systems or neurological conditions.
According to the Immunization Foundation of Australia, vaccination of children against RSV nationally would prevent 10,000 hospital admissions a year.
Dr Lisa McHugh, a perinatal and infectious diseases epidemiologist at the University of Queensland, said the number of active infections is expected to increase as temperatures drop.
