Salmonella is a type of bacteria that lives in the intestines of animals and humans and can cause food poisoning.
Animal products, such as raw meat, unpasteurized milk, undercooked poultry, and eggs, are the foods most likely to carry the bacteria.
Fruits and vegetables can also be contaminated through fertilizers used on crops.
According to the Mayo Clinic, symptoms of salmonella include diarrhea, stomach cramps, fever, vomiting, nausea, chills, headache, and bloody stools.
Most people recover from the illness on their own within a few days, but if symptoms are prolonged or associated with dehydration or a high fever, it is recommended to consult a medical professional.
In the United States last month, the FDA raised a Costco egg recall to its highest risk level over salmonella fears.
On Nov. 27, Handsome Brook Farms issued a recall notice for 10,800 units of 24-count organic pasture-raised eggs sold under the Kirkland Signature brand.
The eggs were sold at 25 Costco stores in Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee as of Nov. 22.
New York-based manufacturer Handsome Brook Farms said the eggs were not intended for sale but were somehow packaged and distributed “in error.”
The FDA upgraded the recall to ‘Class I’ as the eggs ‘have the potential to be contaminated with salmonella bacteria, which hospitalizes 26,000 Americans each year.
A ‘Class I’ recall is a ‘situation in which there is a reasonable probability that use of or exposure to an infringing product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death.’
Handsome Brook Farms in New York recalled Kirkland Signature-branded 24-count cartons because they had “the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella.”
The boxes included in the Handsome Brook Farms recall were sold at 25 Costco stores located in Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee as of November 22, 2024.
Units with Julian code 327 and an expiration date of January 5, 2025 are included in the recall.
The FDA said in the news release that the recall was launched after Handsome Brook officials determined that eggs that were not intended to be delivered to markets had been packaged and distributed to retailers in error.
No known illnesses have been linked to the affected products.
