- An unsolved case moves forward with the arrest of a man
- Denise Govendir allegedly murdered in 1998
A man has been arrested 25 years after allegedly murdering a woman in Sydney’s eastern suburbs.
An 81-year-old man was arrested at 10.15am on Thursday following the death of Denise Govendir, 53, in Dover Heights in March 1998.
Emergency services responded to reports of a home invasion where they located the body of the 53-year-old man at approximately 2am on Tuesday 10 March 1998.
Police were informed that the occupants, Ms Govendir and a 55-year-old man, had been assaulted by a man who broke into their home claiming to be a police officer.
The unknown man is believed to have beaten the 55-year-old man unconscious before restraining him with cable ties.
He is accused of seriously assaulting Ms Govendir before fleeing the scene in a 1997 Ford Laser sedan, which was recovered 1.7km from the home in Rose Bay 11 days later.
The 55-year-old man called police after regaining consciousness.
A forensic investigation conducted between 2005 and 2008 confirmed that Ms Govendir died from blunt force injury to the head intentionally inflicted by one or more unknown persons.
A $1 million reward has been offered in late 2023 to help police solve the mysterious unsolved case.
The 81-year-old man was arrested on Thursday and is expected to be charged with murder at Springwood Police Station.
