It remains unclear when the clip was filmed, but accounts show it was made in Namibia.
The original images would be the first uploaded by the female traveler on Chinese TikTok-esque Douyin before it was shared on Friday by China Cetacean Alliance, an international organization for animal protection and nature conservation.
The video reportedly shows a male Chinese tourist hitting the baby South African fur seal with a slipper a dozen times before the animal suddenly sits up and scrambles to escape on Cape Cross beach in Namibia in southwest Africa.
In the background, a woman laughs and says, “Your mom is calling you to wake up!”
The animal welfare organization claimed that the video was made to draw attention and draw opinions on social media.

China Cetacean Alliance wrote in a post, “Not to mention the hidden dangers and risk of contracting animal diseases, doing something stupid and malicious to get online traffic really discredits Chinese tourists as a group.”
It continued, “We hope everything [social media] platforms can help steer the public sphere of respect for nature and science. Please stop promoting these sensational accounts that are damaging the image of the country! ‘
Screenshots shared by other web users show that the traveler uploaded other videos in which the man continued to attack a few more brown fur seals on the same beach.
All clips have been removed from the original uploader’s social media page.
MailOnline has contacted China Cetacean Alliance for further comments.
The viral video sparked outrage on social media after collecting nearly five million views since it was shared on Chinese Twitter-style Weibo on July 3.
A commenter wrote, “Joking animal cruelty is disgusting!”
Another replied, “What’s wrong with him? Really shameful for Chinese people. They must be blacklisted and cannot travel. ‘
A third web user said, “This is so outrageous. This is exactly why Chinese tourists in other countries are so averse! ‘
