University Southern Maine students demand education professor fired told class theres only two sexes

A group of students at the University of Southern Maine in Portland, Maine are calling for their professor to be fired after she stated in class that there are only two genders.

Christy Hammer, a professor of education, is alleged to have said how only two biological sexes exist during a ‘Creating a Positive Learning Environment’ class.

The statement appeared to have caused an uproar among graduate students in her class.

The comment was made during a heated debate about gender identity, where only one other student agreed with the educator.

The rest maintained both biological gender and social gender are on a spectrum.

University of Southern Maine graduate students walked out of class this month and are demanding officials replace Christy Hammer Ph.D., associate professor of education, because of her remarks

Others who attend the class say that most agreed that there is a spectrum for both gender and biological sex.

The point was first made during class on September 7, but a week later, Elizabeth Leibiger, who is non-binary and was not present the previous week, raised the issue again, coming to the professor to repeat her statement .

After getting a response from the professor, who once again said that only two genders exist, she said she felt ‘under personal attack.’

‘I asked [Hammer] how many genders there were,” Leibiger said. “She said, ‘Two’. I felt personally attacked.”

Almost the entire class of 22 students walked out, all but one demanding a meeting with the university’s School of Education and Human Development.

Elizabeth Leibiger, who is non-binary, said she felt “under personal attack” after Professor Hammer said there were only two genders

‘I told her I didn’t think she was qualified to teach a class on positive learning environments. That’s the ultimate irony,” Leibiger added Fox News.

A restorative justice meeting was held, but Professor Hammer’s position did not change as she continued to argue that only male and female genders exist.

Biologists believe that there is a wider spectrum of gender than just the male-female binary.

Two dozen graduate students in the class went on to demand that the university replace Hammer, believing the professor to be transphobic.

The pupils now refuse to return to the classroom where she teaches and will only attend classes if a new pedagogue is appointed.

The discussion began during a class on September 7, but was resumed on the 14th. It saw 21 out of 22 students walk out and the professor refused to go back

“We are aware of this situation and are taking steps to provide students with the necessary support,” Interim Provost Adam Tuchinsky said Bangor Daily News.

Because of her decision, students do not want to return to the classroom, according to the report, which states they will only return if a new instructor is chosen.

“We are aware of this situation and are taking steps to provide the students with the necessary support,” Interim Provost Adam Tuchinsky told the Bangor Daily News.

Another student suggested that Leibiger should either undergo diversity training or simply retire.

The university has now proposed that an ‘alternative’ department be created for the class, but that the professor not be removed.

‘We have developed an alternative plan for this class and will open a new section of this course for those students who would like to transfer. The original section taught by Professor Hammer will continue for any student who wishes to remain in that class, a university spokesman said.

“It’s our job as educators to grow and change, to address our prejudices and above all else to protect each and every one of our students,” Leibiger argued in the photo. “I think the next step USM needs to take is to be clear about what accountability will look like for Christy Hammer.”

University officials have not disclosed how many students will transfer to the new class.

“It’s our job as educators to grow and change, address our biases and, above all else, protect each and every one of our students,” Leibiger said. “I think the next step USM needs to take is to be clear about what accountability will look like for Christy Hammer.”

There appear to be plenty of people happy to support Hammer’s stance with nearly 2,000 people signing a petition so that she can keep her job.

‘A university that cannot teach facts because the students find them too difficult to handle is useless as an educational institution. We the undersigned are asking USM President Jacqueline Edmondson, Interim Provost Adam Tuchinsky, and Teacher Education Department Chair Flynn Ross to stand firmly behind Professor Hammer and issue a public statement that she will neither be replaced nor required to stop disclosing that sex in humans is binary,’ the petition states.
