Unicode could finally include interracial emoji in 2019

A proposal submitted to the Unicode Consortium requests that there be five different skin tones applied to the emoji of two people standing side by side and holding hands.

Interracial couples can finally be included in the next set of emoji.

A proposal submitted to the Unicode Consortium requests that there be five different skin tones applied to the emoji of two people who stand side by side and hold hands.

The proposal includes emoji of interracial couples of the same sex and mixed sex.

It occurs after users have long asked for the Unicode Consortium to create emojis that reflect all different types of relationships, including interracial relationships.

"The lack of representation of diverse racial identities is a major problem in an increasingly globalized society," says the proposal.

"With this problem gaining more media attention, and since efforts have already been made to ensure the representation of non-heteronormative sexual identities, now it seems an appropriate cultural moment to give people the opportunity to see themselves in the world. emoji

"In addition, in recent years there has been a great increase in the number of interracial couples and marriages, which must be recognized, especially given the current political environment," he continued.

The popular Tinder dating application was included in the list as one of the co-creators of the proposal.

The co-founder of Tinder and Reddit, Alexis Ohanian, originally created a petition urging the Unicode Consortium to consider adding interracial couples to the next set of emojis.

The Unicode Consortium sets the global emoji standard for all platforms.

The proposal includes emoji of interracial couples of the same sex and mixed sex. It occurs after users have clamored for years for Unicode to add different skin tones to the emojis of couples.

Tinder partnered with Ohanian, who is married to Serena Williams, in March, and said at the time: "The Emojis are the universal language of the digital age … It may seem that there is an emoji for everyone, but that is not the case.

"While emojis for people of color and emojis for same-sex couples both became reality in 2015, a group of people is still excluded from the emoji representation: interracial couples … Is not it time for all love to be represented?

Jennifer 8. Lee, another creator of the proposal, previously pushed for the creation of the dumpling emoji and founded Emojination, an emoji diversification project.

The proposal notes how common interracial couples have become, citing a Pew Research study that says that about 17 percent of new marriages and 20 percent of cohabiting relationships in the United States are interracial or interethnic.

The Unicode Consortium has added several other emojis widely requested in recent years.

Earlier this year, in celebration of World Emoji Day, Apple announced that it would add red-haired characters as part of a batch of 70 new emojis.

Gray, bald and curly hair come together with several new animals, including lobster, kangaroo, parrot and peacock.

Other highlights include new emoticons, with cold face, party face, supplicant face and face with hearts, all presented in the latest update.

The new batch of characters will be released to Apple devices around the world later this year as part of a free iOS software update, the Cupertino-based company confirmed.

Healthy consumers will be delighted to see a selection of new fruits and vegetables available in the latest update, which includes a mango and lettuce.

Apple has also added a series of sweeter items, such as a cupcake and moon cake, a traditional Chinese dessert.

Superhero characters will also be joined by an infinity sign, a tennis ball, a test tube and even an evil eye symbol.

While Apple said it is introducing 70 new emoji, the total number should approach 150, including all available options for skin and gender tones.

The new characters are likely to come with iOS 12 when the company pushes the update to iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch devices this fall.

World Emoji Day is an annual event dedicated to digital cartoons, which is currently celebrating its fourth year.

Fans are encouraged to share their ideas on social media using the hashtag #WorldEmojiDay.

Jeremy Burge, creator of World Emoji Day, said he expects the new ginger emoji to attract the most attention from users.

"As always, some of the most striking requests for new emoji are over representation, and this update provides some of the most common requests," he told CNN.

"In particular, redheads and curly hair options are probably popular."

The Emoji are designed and encoded by the non-profit Consortium Unicode, which has already produced more than 2,500 digital cartoons.

Each symbol gets its own spin from the companies that implement them, such as Apple or Samsung.

Companies often take several months to look for new characters offered by the Consortium, and do not always take all their recommendations.

@ 1_Kidney_Col tweeted: NO MORE DISCRIMINATION. Give me my [sic] My emoji ginger.
