Unfortunately, Dyson’s new smart hair dryer is worth every penny

For me, a dryer lives and dies by its diffuser, and I have never seen one like this, which is actually two diffusers. In “diffuse mode,” it looks like any diffuser you’ve ever seen, with tips to get right to the root to dry and help with volume. Dyson says this one is best for curls and curls with more texture.

Remove that part of the tip to use “dome mode”. Instead of blowing air out, it creates an air vortex inside the dome so the air swirls around your curls to dry them. It is intended to lengthen and enhance waves and curls. For my hair, it was best to use them together and I think many curl types would benefit from both. I dried the roots and thicker bottom layer with the regular diffuser and then switched to the dome for length, especially focusing on the damaged curls at the top that require a little more TLC to bring out the shape.

You’ll notice some slight visual changes from the first Supersonic. The lights change color depending on the heat setting, turning blue for cool, yellow for low heat, orange for medium heat, and red for high heat. It makes it a little more fun, but it’s also a good visual cue to quickly check what setting you’re on. However, my favorite new addition is the transparent back where the settings are, which gives you an inside look at some of the internals. As a big fan of 90s transparent technology, I want more of this all the time. Dyson, if you’re reading this, people want totally transparent hair tools with candy-colored wires.

Putting most of the controls on the back of the barrel is a smart decision (as it was with the original). Most dryers place the buttons right where your hands grip the handle, so you can accidentally change the setting when you’re simply trying to bring it closer to your head. Here, the power switch and the cold shot button. are in the handle, but out of the way.

Smart features

Supersonic Nural has some unique smart features that make the hair drying process a little easier. Scalp Protection Mode uses a time-of-flight (ToF) sensor and infrared beam to detect when the dryer approaches your head, automatically lowering the temperature to 131 degrees Fahrenheit. Although it only works with some of the attachments, such as the soft air attachment, styling concentrator and straightening nozzle, it means you don’t have to fiddle with the settings as you work your way from the roots outwards.
