Madrid eliminated Chelsea in last year’s quarter-finals in dramatic fashion amid a spirited comeback by the Premier League club in the second leg.
Speaking at a fan event on Thursday, Chelsea boss Graham Potter said his team are aiming to win the “f—ing Champions League.”
Following Friday’s draw, Potter told a news conference that he was excited but focused on his next Premier League game.
“I said we would try to ‘blink’ to win the Champions League,” he said. “That’s the same, I’m pretty sure, for the other seven clubs as well.
“And all the other clubs would say you can lose in the quarter-finals because that’s the nature of the Champions League. We’ll focus on Real Madrid when we get there, but for the moment, Everton.”
“The feeling is one of emotion, but I prefer to talk about Everton because that is tomorrow’s game and the rest is far away.”
Pep Guardiola is looking to guide City to their first Champions League title, but must face a return to Munich to do so. The Spanish coach spent three years in charge of Bayern between 2013 and 2016 and faces tough competition from Julian Nagelsmann’s team, who eliminated Paris Saint-Germain in the previous round.
Elsewhere, this season’s knockout stages see three Italian teams reach the quarterfinals for the first time since 2006.
Inter Milan will face Benfica in the quarter-finals, while local rivals AC Milan took on Serie A leaders Napoli.
The first legs of the quarterfinals will take place on April 11 and 12, and the second legs will take place on April 18 and 19. The semifinals will take place on May 9 and 10 and May 16 and 17.
This year’s final will take place at the Ataturk Olympic Stadium in Istanbul on June 10.
