Fined: Uber shared information about its European drivers with its US headquarters for two years

Uber has been fined a record £246m after transferring its drivers’ personal data to the US.

The Dutch data protection regulator imposed the fine after determining that the group had committed a “serious breach” of the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) during the transfer. It is the largest fine Uber has ever received globally and the largest ever imposed by the regulator.

Uber shared information about its European drivers, including ID cards, taxi licenses and location data, with its US headquarters for two years, according to the watchdog.

The US company shared the information without using data transfer tools intended to protect privacy, meaning the data was “insufficiently protected”, Dutch authorities said.

Uber said it would appeal the “unjustified” fine.

The financial blow comes as EU countries continue to crack down on the practices of big tech companies.

Uber has also faced legal battles in the UK over the worker status of its drivers.
