The Reddit user said he hired his brother, then 22, during the pandemic to help “get him back on his feet”.
He claims the couple had ‘no malice’ before the wedding incident and is even delighted that his brother now wants to become a master plumber and ‘start his own business’.
But he doesn’t think he can get over his brother distracting him and his wife on their special day.
“At my wedding, which he witnessed, he decided that during his speech he would give us all a big surprise and decided to propose to his longtime girlfriend,” he explained.
“My wife and I were appalled. We both feel like he stole the shine from our day. All the other members of our families were very excited and kept taking pictures with her, looking at the ring, etc.
He claims his brother and his parents believe he overreacted to the situation by firing his younger brother.
“They say ‘business should be kept separate from our personal life’, but I just can’t ignore what he did and how he ruined our day. Am I thinking about it too much?” he questioned.
“He’s still my brother and I wouldn’t let him lose his house because of this. But as a small business, I can’t imagine seeing him at work every day. At least not now.
The groom, who was met with mixed responses from fellow Reddit users, added, “I love all the people who say ‘you were looking for a reason to fire him’ or ‘you’re just jealous. “
“He was my witness. I was never upset that he opened his own business. In fact, he has my full blessing.
“This job was only supposed to get him back on his feet. I’m so happy that he liked the area and wants to go further. There was no wickedness before this incident.
While most users agreed it was ‘cheesy’ of her brother to propose at the wedding reception, many felt that terminating his employment was an ‘unwarranted overreaction’. .
The groom fired back, alleging that his His brother’s actions at the wedding demonstrated a lack of “maturity”, which is why he fired him.
He added: “I wouldn’t speak badly if a potential employer asked me about him. I would be honest about his work. But what he did shows me a lack of maturity and made me lack confidence. These are not good qualities for an employee.
“I understand it was ‘out of time’, but you can’t insult your boss out of time and expect no consequences. We are a small company (five employees, now four) and I supervise everyone. He will be able to find work elsewhere in the region.
