A pair of tourists drowned after becoming trapped in a rip on a beach known for its treacherous waters.
Emergency services received reports of three adults in distress in the water at Conspicuous Cliff Beach, near Walpole, in the south-west of Western Australia, about 2.40pm on Saturday.
Police arrived at the scene and found the trio had been recovered from the surf and began performing CPR.
A 44-year-old man and a 40-year-old woman died at the scene, while a second man, 42, was able to be revived and rushed to hospital.
Police believe the three knew each other and had traveled to the beach, which is not patrolled by lifeguards, from Perth.
A report will be prepared for the coroner.
The Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions warns that the stretch of coastline that includes Conspicuous Cliff Beach “may be dangerous.”
