Two people were killed and ten others injured after a woman armed with a fruit knife launched a brutal knife attack at a Chinese primary school.

The deadly attack took place around noon at Wufang Mingde Primary School in Guixi city, south China’s Jiangxi province.

Police have stated that it was carried out by a 45-year-old woman, surnamed Pan, who had used a fruit knife during her brutal stabbing. It has not yet been confirmed whether there are children among the victims.

The guilty woman has since been arrested, the police added in a statement posted on social media.

Two people died after rescue efforts failed. Four more suffered non-life-threatening injuries and six others suffered “minor scratches”, according to state broadcaster CCTV.

It is currently unclear why the primary school, which in China teaches children aged six to 12, was attacked.

Pan is currently detained by police and the case is under investigation, the station added.

Parents at the school revealed their shock and fears after hearing the news that the school had been attacked.

Talking with him bbc, one parent said: ‘Of course, we are afraid. It’s not just the children; Even us adults are very scared.”

He also added that the teachers handled the tragic incident well and immediately posted photos of the children in the parent group, indicating that they were safe and assuring them that the doors were closed.

Another parent, who preferred to remain anonymous, said: “I got the news at midday and I was very surprised.”

‘My son is in fifth grade and is very young and has arrived home safely, but the school has not informed us of anything and has kept everything hidden.

“I will return to comfort my son and find out what exactly happened.”

The incident fits a disturbing pattern seen in China in recent months, with a series of knife attacks killing and wounding several civilians, including an attack that broke out at a hospital.

Earlier this month, a man stabbed two people to death and injured 21 others at a hospital in the southern province of Yunnan.

In August last year, a man with a history of mental illness killed two people and injured seven others after unleashing a knife attack in a residential district, also in Yunnan.

In July of the same year, six people, including three children, were stabbed to death in a disgusting kindergarten in the southeastern province of Guangdong.

In the mass murder, police arrested a 25-year-old man surnamed Wu in Lianjiang.

Firearms are banned in China, but the country has suffered at least 17 knife attacks in schools, colleges and universities since 2010, ten of which occurred in more recent years, between 2018 and 2023.

In most of these cases, the perpetrators have been men who have expressed grudges against society, although experts have said there may be additional factors for what appears to be a rise in mass stabbings in China.

This is breaking news. More to follow.
