‘Twitter’s API is BROKEN’: Users around the world can’t access outgoing links on the platform
- Twitter’s API service has gone down worldwide, making it impossible to click on links
- Users get error messages that their API subscription doesn’t include access
Twitter is down as tens of thousands of users receive a “Your current API subscription does not include access to this endpoint.”
The problem appears with all links on the social media platform and tweets embedded in external news articles. Images and videos shared in tweets will also not appear on the site.
One user, a computer science professor at Princeton University in New Jersey, believes the “mistake” is because Twitter charges itself for API access – “but Twitter couldn’t afford to pay.”
Elon Musk responded to the outage about an hour after it appeared, tweeting that “this platform is so fragile (sigh). Will be resolved soon.’

Problem reports appeared on DownDector, a website that monitors online outages, around 11:30 a.m. ET.
And the website and smartphone app are both affected by the outage.
Twitter’s API status page shows “All Systems Operational,” which is far from what users are experiencing.
The social media platform loads, but feeds take a few seconds to populate – and the same issue affects TweetDeck.
It appears that the issue is related to Twitter’s move to a paid API, which the company announced in early February.
The shared announcement will charge $100 per month for the basic level of API and is aimed at developers looking to promote on the site.
The phrase ‘Twitter API’ started trending when the issue hit users and now has over 60,000 tweets and is still rising.

Elon Musk responded to the outage about an hour after it appeared
“Some parts of Twitter may not be working as expected at this time. We made an internal change that had some unintended consequences,” Twitter shared.
“We’re working on this now and will share an update when it’s resolved.”
