Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey says they will NOT add an edit button to the platform

It is the most requested Twitter feature, but users will not soon see an edit button on the platform – and the CEO has revealed why.

In a Q&A video with Wired Jack Dorsey was asked if there would be an edit button for Twitter in 2020, to which he replied: “The answer is no.”

He explains that tweets were originally sent via sms and that you can no longer call up text after sending. That’s why the company never added the option.

However, the social media site now omits the function in an effort to preserve the atmosphere of the original design.

There are good reasons for editing tweets, says Dorsey, such as correcting typos and broken links, but also malicious applications, such as editing content to mislead people.

“So these are all considerations,” says Dorsey. “But we’ll probably never do it.”

During the interview, he said that Twitter has considered a time window that allows users to edit tweets, which can be 30 seconds to a minute.

Users may not have the ability to edit tweets, but they can quickly determine who responds.

Last week at CES, Twitter executives took the stage to unveil ‘conversation partners’ who appear on the ‘Compose Tweet’ screen and contain four answer settings: global, group, panel and statement.

With the different options, everyone can reply, limit answers to people you follow or mention in the tweet, only leave that comment a comment and finally the last setting blocks all comments.

Although Twitter said the function is to end trolling on the platform, visitors to CES asked how wrong information is debunked if the user blocks others from responding.

The new feature was first reported by The edge, who listened to Twitters director product management, Suzanne Xie, during the event.

‘We are very enthusiastic about this, because it not only helps people to feel more comfortable as a … community, but also [because it] allows us to create a whole new format for conversations, “she explained.

Xie says that Twitter “is researching the function” and that “the mock-ups will be part of an experiment that we are going to conduct” in the first quarter.

The social media giant gathers what he has learned from the experiment and uses it for the global launch that will take place later this year.

Twitter’s product leader Kayvon Beykpour said: “Part of the purpose of the experiment is to see what the results are. How does that affect the relationship situation? How does that influence the way people have good conversations? “

Xie was confronted with questions during the disclosure, in particular one that could have early or restrictive answers that meant that incorrect information could not be easily refuted.

She noted that this is “something we will look at very carefully when we experiment.”

Twitter also noted that this change is aimed at reducing the more unhealthy conversations floating around its platform, rather than causing a stream of misinformation.

The function is currently only a test and will only be accessible to a small group of users.

Twitter says it will start experimenting with the new answer feature sometime in the coming months and that it will closely monitor and look for feedback before deciding whether it will be made more widely available.
