Nearly two dozen residents have been evacuated from an apartment building in Sydney’s southwest after the roof suddenly collapsed.

Emergency services rushed to the block of two-storey units on Myall Street in Cabramatta after the roof collapsed at 12.30pm on Wednesday.

A NSW Ambulance spokesperson said two people were assessed at the scene but did not require further treatment, and several were treated for dust inhalation.

Fire and Rescue NSW said the building suffered substantial damage. It is not yet known what caused the roof to collapse.

“Specialist FRNSW teams are assessing the extent of the damage to six two-level units within the complex,” a spokesperson said.

Fire and Rescue Superintendent Mat Sigmund told Daily Mail Australia there does not appear to be any external damage to the property.

He said fire crews had received reports that the roof may have already been damaged before it collapsed.

A NSW Police spokeswoman said residents will not be allowed to return to the unit block until the risk of collapse and asbestos is removed.

“Police have identified 13 residents who needed to be relocated and have confirmed that accommodation has been arranged,” the spokeswoman said.

Images from the scene showed the roof of the apartment building covered with large silver tarps.

Several residents had gathered outside the apartment block after firefighters arrived and cordoned off the area.

The roof sheathing was torn during the fall and debris and construction materials were scattered along an interior staircase.

Footage from the scene showed the street blocked by a fire truck and other emergency services vehicles, including a police car.
