Acting Deputy Commissioner Robert Hill said that while the investigation is still in its infancy, the woman and her children “died in suspicious circumstances.”
“Who is responsible for the deaths of the four people has yet to be determined and we should not draw any conclusions at this point,” he said.
He said it would be “extremely unfair” to assume blame on the grounds that the father is assisting the police.
“We just need to understand the facts, and unfortunately they are not known to us, but they will be in full time,” he said.
“We still have a long way to go before we can really understand and appreciate what happened.”
It is clear that the father appeared ‘extremely upset’ on the street when the emergency services arrived on the scene.
“He was desperate on the street,” a witness told The Herald Sun.
