‘Trump in the dock’: Every major US newspaper reports the ex-president’s day in court across its front pages as his arrest dominates coverage at home and abroad
- Trump’s arrest on Tuesday made front pages of newspapers around the world
- In most cases, he was seen in a Manhattan courtroom answering criminal charges
- The judge has scheduled his next in-person court appearance for December 4
The arrest of former President Donald Trump on Tuesday dominated newspaper lines around the world.
Most showed an instantly iconic image of an expressionless Trump, hunched over a Manhattan court table as he read the 34 charges against him.
The few terms that popped up in the headlines told most of the story: “Trump arrested,” “34 felonies,” and “plead not guilty.” When he made his case around 3 p.m., Trump became the first US president to respond to criminal charges.
The 16-page indictment relates to multiple bonuses made by Trump in the run-up to the 2016 election.
Most notably, $130,000 to porn star Stormy Daniels was combined with $30,000 to a janitor trying to sell information on a child Trump allegedly fathered out of wedlock, as well as $150,000 to former Playboy model Karen McDougall.
Outside the court, there was a split between those who saw the indictment against him as a weaponization of the justice system by overzealous District Attorney Alvin Bragg, and those who want accountability for the Trump years that culminated on Jan. 6.
After his court appearance – the first of what is expected to be many – Trump retreated to his home in Mar-a-Lago, Florida where he addressed his followers later in the day to drum up support for his upcoming presidential campaign.
The judge overseeing the criminal case has scheduled the next in-person hearing for December 4 — about two months before the 2024 Republican presidential primaries officially begin.
