Former President Donald Trump thanked the Utah GOP for berating Republican Senator Mitt Romney at Saturday’s state convention.
“ So nice to see RINO Mitt Romney booed off the stage at the Utah Republican State Convention, ” Trump sent in a statement Monday afternoon. “They’re among the first to discover this guy, an icy loser!”
Trump and Romney have had bad blood for years – with Romney among the handful of Republicans publicly critical of Trump during the 2016 campaign – voting to convict him twice on allegations of impeachment.

Over 2,000 Utah Republicans booed Romney when he arrived to speak at a convention in Utah
Speaking at a GOP convention in Utah on Saturday, more than 2,000 in attendance booed Romney.
The vocal backlash came after Romney, who represents Utah in the U.S. Senate, narrowly avoided GOP disapproval of the state’s impeachment votes.
“Aren’t you ashamed?” Romney said in response to the shout as he walked onto the stage.
“I’m a guy who says what he means, and you know I wasn’t a fan of our last president’s character issues,” he said.
Cries of “traitor” and “communist” came from the crowd.
“You can drink as much as you want,” Romney continued. ‘I’ve been a Republican all my life. My father was the governor of Michigan and I was the Republican candidate for president in 2012.
So yes, I understand I have a few people who don’t like me very much and I’m sorry. But I express my opinion as I believe is right and I follow my conscience as I believe is right, ” Romney added.
Romney managed to elicit a few cheers when he asked the audience if they were fans of Biden.
“So what do you think of President Biden’s first 100 days?” Romney asked.
The motion to condemn Romney narrowly failed, 798 to 711, in a vote by delegates to the state’s GOP convention.
At one point, Derek Brown, the chairman of the Utah GOP, interrupted Romney’s speech to tell the rowdy crowd to simmer.
Despite the negativity, Romney ended his speech on a positive note.
“We must come together in strength and unity,” he said.
Don Guymon, Davis County deputy who drafted the censure resolution, said Romney’s votes to remove Trump from office “hurt the constitution and the party.”
“This was a process driven by Democrats who hated Trump,” Guymon said. Romney’s vote in the first charge encouraged Democrats who continued to harass Trump.
The proposal, in addition to several platform changes debated on Saturday, also aimed to commend the other members of the Utah congressional delegation for their support of the former president.

Trump and Romney were also pictured weeks after Trump won the 2016 election, where the two discussed the possibility of a cabinet position for Romney.
Others warned that backing the censure risked defining the party around Trump, rather than the conservative principles most delegates cherish.
“When it comes to letting Mitt Romney know we’re not happy with him, trust me, he knows,” said Emily de Azavedo Brown, Salt Lake County representative. Let’s not make it a Trump or not a Trump thing. Are we a party of principle or a party of a person? ‘
Romney was one of seven GOP senators who voted to condemn Trump for instigating the deadly January 6 riot at the Capitol.
The Senate ultimately voted 57-43 to acquit the former president for failing to pass the 67-vote threshold to convict.
Romney is not standing for reelection in 2022.
Fellow GOP Senator Susan Collins told CNN’s Jake Tapper that she was “ shocked to see a video harassing Romney.
“Mitt Romney is an excellent senator who serves his state and our country well,” she said on CNN’s State of the Union. “We Republicans must remember that we are united by fundamental principles such as a belief in personal responsibility, individual freedom, opportunity, free markets, strong national defense.”
“We are not a party run by just one person,” insisted Collins, adding to the GOP. . ‘
Senator Susan Collins said she was “appalled” to see a video of fellow-Centrist Republican Mitt Romney booed and harassed at a GOP conference in his home state of Utah.
Collins and Romney were two of seven Republican senators who voted earlier this year to condemn Trump in his second impeachment trial for instigating the Capitol riots on January 6, 2021.
In her CNN interview, Collins also defended Wyoming Rep. Liz Cheney, who, as chairman of the Republican Conference, is the number 3 Republican in the House.
“Liz Cheney is a woman of strength and conscience,” said the Maine senator. And she did what she felt was right. And for that I greet her. ‘
“We have to accept the disagreements in our party,” Collins drove home. “We don’t want to become too much of the Democratic Party, which has been taken over by the progressive left. We need space for different views. ‘
Cheney was the highest-ranking Republican in the House to vote for Trump’s impeachment for the second time.
Trump has called on the Republican Party to oust both Romney and Cheney.
Trump also targeted Cheney on Monday, sending a statement suggesting she lose her reelection bid by 2022.
Heartwarming to read new polls on the great warlike Liz Cheney from the great state of Wyoming. She’s so low her only chance would be if large numbers of people stand up to her, which hopefully won’t happen, ” Trump said. “They never loved her very much, but I say she’ll never run in Wyoming again!”
