For decades, Democrats have enjoyed wide margins of support from the Latino population, but a new NBC/Telemundo poll shows a drop in support for Vice President Kamala Harris.
Support for Harris is at 54 percent, according to the poll, while former President Donald Trump is at 40 percent. Six percent said they were not sure who they wanted to be president or would not vote.
While Harris enjoys a healthy 14-point lead over Latinos, it is much smaller than previous Democratic presidential candidates.
President Joe Biden had a 36-point lead among Latinos in 2020 and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton had a healthy 50-point lead over Trump. Former President Barack Obama leads his Republican opponent, former Governor Mitt Romney, by 39 points.
Trump enjoys higher ratings than Harris on the economy, on dealing with inflation and the cost of living, and on border security and immigration control.
Harris gets more positive marks for her competence, honesty and having the right temperament to be president.
Overall, 77 percent of voters in the survey said the economy was fair or poor, while only 23 percent described it as excellent or good.
Part of the gap is attributed to a difference in presidential preference between different age groups.
The poll shows Harris enjoys a 60-point lead over Trump among Hispanic voters over 50, while Trump leads voters under 50 by nine points.
There is also a large difference in results by gender, continuing a trend from 2024 among the general electorate.

Harris enjoys a 26-point lead over Trump among women, while Trump is tied with Harris among men.
The NBC News/Telemundo/CNBC Latino Poll included 1,000 registered Latino voters and was conducted Sept. 16-23.
