Trump says he hasn’t asked Ron DeSantis if he will run in 2024 – but thinks he will beat him

Former President Trump said he has not spoken to Ron DeSantis about whether he will compete in 2024, but said he is confident he would defeat the Florida governor in a matchup.

“I don’t know if Ron is on the run, and I’m not asking him,” Trump said. New Yorker in an interview. “It’s his privilege. I think I would win.’

Trump has constantly teased a run in 2024, and those close to the former president have said he has become jealous of the congressman turned governor whose career he believes has made.

Taking credit for the governor’s 2018 win, Trump told the New Yorker, “If I hadn’t supported him, he wouldn’t have won.”

DeSantis and Trump have long had a public alliance until now, but in 2020, the former president began to question DeSantis’ allegiance.

The governor campaigned for Trump, appearing at some of his Florida rallies, but Trump was unconvinced, internal sources told the New Yorker. “Ron will tell you he’s doing everything he can for the president, and he’ll sound credible,” said a lawyer who speaks regularly with both men.

“He won’t kiss the ring,” a political insider who speaks with DeSantis often said.

Others said the governor is unlikely to pull out of a fight given his increasing popularity.

“Ron has been told for four years that he is Trump’s successor, that all women want to sleep with him and all men want to be him,” the adviser said. “Ron has heard far too often, ‘You’re next.’

Still, DeSantis has traveled across the country collecting donations for his re-election bid in 2022, raising an additional $10.2 million in May to bring the total amount raised for his reelection bid to $124 million.

And a few recent polls have recently placed the governor ahead of the former president in popularity with conservatives — DeSantis defeated Trump in a recent straw poll asking those attending the Western Conservative Summit who they’d like to see top of the ticket in 2024.

DeSantis, 43, was ticked off by 71.0 percent of respondents, Trump by 67.8 and Senator Ted Cruz third by 28.7 percent. DeSantis also won the straw poll last year.
