Go with the flow: One of Trump's first executive orders will target regulations limiting the flow of shower heads

Donald Trump’s flurry of executive orders during his first hours to usher in a new ‘Golden Age of America’ will roll back a host of liberal regulations, including one that limits water flow to showers.

Trump plans to sign an executive order on ‘Unlocking American Energy,’ and will focus on regulations conservatives have criticized that limit water use in dishwashers and showers, according to White House officials.

It is among a series of 100 orders Trump plans to try to suddenly change policy and signal a new era and deregulation, even as he tries to put in place plans for mass deportations and big-ticket items he campaigned on.

It’s no small issue for Trump, who has repeatedly complained publicly about water pressure problems for years, including at a January news conference at Mar-a-Lago just days before taking office.

‘When you buy a faucet, no water comes out. Even in areas with so much water you don’t know what to do. It’s called rain. Come down from the sky. And they want no water to come out of the shower. It’s dripping, dripping, dripping… So what’s happening? You spend ten times as much time in the shower.

As Trump’s team put it, the orders will end efforts to “reduce consumer choice” regarding dishwashers, gas stoves and shower heads. Federal regulations set a maximum flow rate of 2.5 gallons per minute for shower heads.

There are detailed government regulations published in the Federal Register describing terms such as “shower head”, “body spray” and “safety shower head”.

The Trump administration implemented them in December 2020, just weeks before leaving office, after complaining months earlier that he needed high-pressure water to make his hair “perfect.”

In 2021, the Biden administration repealed a Trump-era rule that increased the flow of water that could pass through shower heads.

Trump had complained at the White House: ‘So what do you do? Do you stay there longer or shower longer? Because my hair, I don’t know about you, has to be perfect.’

Another order will declare a “national energy emergency” in Alaska. “We need an abundance of American energy here at home with that increased production,” a White House official told reporters. The United States leads the world in crude oil production, but the official said the high costs were “unacceptable.” High energy costs increase the costs of a variety of consumer goods.

At the same time, it is repealing what it calls the ‘electric vehicle mandate’: government incentives intended to boost electric car purchases.

Some of Trump’s policy actions require only the stroke of a pen. Others will require a lengthy regulatory process.

The orders come after Trump declared at his indoor inauguration that “America’s Golden Age begins right now” and said he was “saved by God to make America great again,” while criticizing to a “radical and corrupt system.”

He said there would be a “restoration” of America in what he called a “common sense revolution.”

“We’ll drill, baby, we’ll drill,” Trump said in his inaugural address after touting his energy plans.
