Trump family failed to report 100 valuable foreign gifts, House Democrats say

Former President Donald Trump’s family did not disclose more than 100 foreign gifts valued above the reporting threshold and collectively worth more than $250,000, House Democrats said Friday.

The dazzling amount of gifts, many from foreign leaders, are detailed in a report by Democrats on the House Oversight Committee. They include a set of books from China’s President Xi Jinping and golf clubs given to the luxury-loving commander-in-chief by then-Prime Minister Shinzo Abe of Japan.

The 15 page report He said Trump also failed to report a $12,000 silk rug from Uzbekistan’s President Shavkat Mirziyoyev and a $35,000 ivory-handled dagger from Qatar’s ruler Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.

A “larger than life” painting of Trump of El Salvador President Nayib Bukele is also missing, according to the report. Some of the gifts are missing, including the portrait, Democrats say.

“The Democrats on the committee are committed to determining the final whereabouts of these missing high-value gifts,” said Rep. Jamie Raskin, a Maryland Democrat and ranking member of the oversight committee.

Raskin added that the report’s findings illustrate the “blatant disregard for the rule of law and the systematic mishandling of large gifts from foreign governments” by the Trump White House.

Trump’s spokesmen did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The analysis also listed unreported foreign gifts to members of the Trump family, including Melania Trump, Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump.

Kushner received a sword from Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, and Ivanka Trump got a $1,200 teddy bear from Austria’s Chancellor Sebastian Kurz, according to the report.

The report said the discoveries raise questions about whether “foreign governments may have used gifts to influence US policy under President Trump” and that the committee was seeking additional records.
