Ronald Reagan was the last president to be shot in an assassination attempt before Donald Trump was killed at a rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday.

While leaving the Hilton Hotel in Washington, D.C., on March 30, 1981, Reagan was shot several times and wounded when a bullet ricocheted off a vehicle and struck him under the left armpit.

Then-President Reagan spent 12 days at George Washington University Hospital before returning to the White House.

Trump, though not currently president of the United States, is the first to be shot in an assassination attempt since that day in 1981.

The gunman is dead, according to police.

The former president and presumptive Republican presidential nominee this year was speaking at a rally in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on Saturday when several pops rang out before Trump grabbed his ear and hid behind the podium.

Several members of Trump’s Secret Service were on hand to protect him and escort him off the stage.

A resilient Trump immediately stood up and raised his fist as blood ran down the side of his face.

An assassination attempt on President Reagan ended with his press secretary, James Brady, shot in the head. A police officer and a Secret Service agent were also wounded.

The only other failed assassination attempt on an American president before Reagan was on Theodore Roosevelt.

Three and a half years after leaving office, he was shot while campaigning in 1912 as a member of the Progressive Party.
