A Melbourne driver has died in a violent crash following an alleged hit-and-run collision.

Emergency services were called to Hopkins Rd in Truganina in the city’s west at around 1am on Thursday.

“Investigators have been told the male driver of a silver Holden SUV collided with another vehicle on Hopkins Road at around 12.50pm,” Victoria Police said.

‘The impact of the impact forced the other vehicle to flip onto its side and catch fire.’

The driver of the crashed vehicle sustained life-threatening injuries and was taken to hospital, where they later died.

The driver has not yet been formally identified.

Police allege the 23-year-old Holden SUV driver fled the scene on foot and was apprehended by officers a short time later.

He assists the police with the investigation.

The exact cause of the accident has not yet been determined and the investigation remains ongoing.

Anyone who witnessed the crash, or has dashcam footage or other information, is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.

Hopkins Rd remains closed in both directions between Grand and Kirkpatrick Blvd.

Drivers have been asked to use the Deer Park Bypass, Robinsons Rd and Boundary Rd instead.
