Truck crashes into light rail, causing chaos for Sydney commuters

A truck collided with a light rail tram, completely paralyzing the service.

The truck driver was treated for minor injuries after the crash at the intersection of Pitt and Hay Street, Haymarket in Sydney’s CBD, shortly before 7am on Friday.

Emergency services, including police and several fire brigades, were called to the scene.

A New South Wales Ambulance spokesman told Daily Mail Australia that the truck driver suffered minor injuries.

A woman was also treated at the scene for injuries to her arm. Neither patient required hospitalization.

It is not known whether the woman was inside the tram when she suffered her injuries.

The collision caused the tram to derail, forcing all 60 passengers on board to evacuate the tram. The Telegraph newspaper information.

The tram’s front windscreen was shattered and the front bumper was also damaged after being crushed by the side of the truck.

The truck hit a nearby traffic pole after the collision.

The area has been cordoned off and Pitt Street has since been closed to motorists.

L1 Dulwich Hill services are now cancelled between Convention and Central and commuters are urged to take the bus instead.

Northbound traffic remains heavy on Pitt Street.

A spokeswoman for New South Wales Police told the Daily Mail that officers are investigating the incident.
