Troy Aikman hit rock bottom while going through his divorce from Catherine 'Capa' Mooty

As Troy Aikman kept his cool in the public eye, he revealed he had secretly hit rock bottom amid the fallout from his second marriage to Catherine “Capa” Mooty.

Rarely speaking about his private life, the veteran NFL broadcaster shared how the collapse of his union sent him to a dark place in an interview with The athletic.

“It was a failure. That was my lowest point,” the Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback said of the marriage.

Aikman and Capa tied the knot in a small ceremony in California in September 2017, three months after he proposed during a trip to Lake Como in Italy. The couple reportedly dated for a year before the proposal.

Later in the interview, The Athletic pointed to contentment as the catalyst for their breakup after robbing Aikman of his happiness.

“To me, contentment was always a dirty word. I never wanted to be content,” Aikman said. “I didn’t want to be around anyone who was content. That’s not a place I could get to.”

One day, Aikman ‘looked up and realized his second marriage was falling apart,’ according to The Athletic.

“The success everyone saw masked an inner turmoil no one knew about. Aikman struggled with that for decades, fighting his own happiness, chasing a goal whose existence he’s not even sure of.”

With the divorce in retrospect, The Athletic highlighted how Aikman is taking care of himself at age 57.

Aside from lifting weights four days a week, Aikman “hasn’t taken a hot shower in years. He starts each morning with a cold shower and a 20-minute walk in the sunlight to set his circadian rhythm. He goes to bed at 9 p.m. unless he’s commentating a game,” according to The Athletic.

Aikman has two daughters in their 20s, Alexa and Jordan, from his first marriage to former Cowboys publicist Rhonda Worthey. They announced their separation in January 2011 after a decade-long marriage.

Meanwhile, Aikman has not announced her split from Capa and admitted that she was embarrassed to talk about it years later. Capa still uses Aikman’s last name on her Instagram.

News of Aikman and Capa’s split came after the former went public with his rumored girlfriend, Haley Clark, in June 2023. Clark, a saleswoman for a Dallas menswear brand, shared photos with Aikman on a trip to Italy.

The following month, PEOPLE reported that Capa and Aikman were officially divorced.

Capa, co-owner of mobile shopping service Luxeliner, has two children from her marriage to real estate attorney Jerry Mooty.
