W.While Keir Starmer was trying to enjoy a family holiday in Madeira over the new year, Elon Musk was trying to ruin it. The world’s richest man has been using
This potentially revolutionary money has meant that his comments, which some users have likened to those of a “pub bore” on his own social media platform, have sparked a (possibly undeserved) political backlash and media debate. So what issues have infuriated Musk?
toilet gangs
It was New Year’s Eve and 5:48 a.m. in London when Musk turned his attention to “grooming gangs of Pakistani descent,” a topic he appears to have been new to. An account on the Oxford area.
The screenshot containing details of horrendous crimes had been reposted by an account with a larger number of followers, with the additional comment that “out of political correctness, the government went to great lengths to cover up the crimes.” It is unclear what government involvement the story was referring to. Previous criticism had focused on Oxfordshire County Council and local police. However, Musk promoted the post to his 210 million followers.
“Responsible government officials, including those in the judiciary, should be shamed (sic) for this,” he wrote. The billionaire Tesla boss was momentarily distracted by Joe Biden’s mental health, but then went on to retweet an old video of Tommy Robinson, a convicted fraudster whose real name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, during one of his previous prison stints.
Tommy Robinson
Robinson is serving an 18-month prison sentence for contempt of court for repeating false accusations against a Syrian refugee, in violation of a court order. Musk commented: “Why do rapists get suspended sentences in the UK, but this guy gets 18 months of solitary confinement, despite not having done anything violent?” A torrent of similarly framed tweets followed.
GB News then reported that Safeguarding Minister Jess Phillips had last year rejected a request from Oldham council for a public inquiry into another grooming scandal. “Shameful,” Musk tweeted. Starmer, the former Director of Public Prosecutions, was accused, without evidence, of being part of a cover-up. Now it was Kemi Badenoch’s turn.
“An investigation into childcare gangs is long overdue,” the Conservative leader and former cabinet minister said. “There have been trials across the country in recent years, but no authority has connected the dots,” he said.
It later emerged that the last Conservative government had also rejected calls for a public inquiry. “Because?” Musk tweeted.
UK Reform
Musk’s determination to plague both the Conservative and Labor houses may well become a pressing issue for Starmer and Badenoch in 2025. “Britain needs reforms now,” Musk tweeted on January 2. Great Yarmouth Reform MP Rupert Lowe, 67, might have been a little surprised by the sudden attention he was receiving on social media at the start of the new year. Musk promoted two of his tweets. He did the same to Badenoch’s former rival for the Conservative leadership, Robert Jenrick, an immigration hardliner, after he wrote an article for the Telegraph headlined: “The truth about recruitment gangs is finally coming out.” to the light.”
Reform UK leader Nigel Farage has made it known that Musk is considering making a sizeable donation to his party. Badenoch has said he does not believe it. It may have given you pause last month when Musk posed alongside Farage and his billionaire treasurer, Nick Candy, at Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago home.
the economy
Starmer’s approach to Musk’s invective has been to stay silent. Not so Health Secretary Wes Streeting, who on Friday called Musk’s comments “misjudged and certainly misinformed” but asked him to “work with us.”
And his attacks on the British economy provoked a response from Downing Street. Musk claimed that “very few” companies wanted to invest in Labor Britain. Downing Street took the bait, with a spokesperson commenting that business investment in the third quarter of this year is estimated to have increased by 4.5% compared to this time last year.
Musk, however, used his digital speaker to redouble his attack. “Starmer was complicit in the RAPE OF BRITAIN when he was head of the Crown Prosecution Service for 6 years,” Musk tweeted on Friday. “Starmer must go and must face charges for his complicity in the worst mass crime in Britain’s history.”
