Gus Worland has announced that he will leave Triple M at the end of the year after a 16-year career.

Worland, 55, who first gained popularity as part of Triple M’s iconic Grill Team, recently presented The Rush Hour on 104.9 Triple M Sydney.

After almost eight years working with her mental fitness charity Gotcha4Life, Worland decided to leave radio and focus on mental health advocacy full time.

Worland’s final show on Triple M will air at the end of the year and it is not yet known who will replace him at the network.

Known for his mix of humor and heartfelt connection with listeners, the longtime radio host’s announcement has come as a shock to fans.

In a statement on Monday, Worland, who is a long-time friend of Hugh Jackman, thanked his colleagues and behind-the-scenes staff while confirming his departure.

“From my early days with Matty Johns, Mark Geyer and Chris Page, to my current team with Jude Bolton and Aaron Woods, I have been fortunate to work with incredible people,” he said.

“I am especially grateful to the team who have worked tirelessly behind the scenes to keep the show going.”

While he will be stepping away from his day-to-day role on Triple M, he assures fans he will be no stranger and will appear as a guest on shows in the future.

Matthew O’Reilly, Triple M Metro content director, praised Worland’s contributions during his 16 years at the network, saying: “Gus has been an integral part of the Triple M family for 16 years.

‘We understand your desire to focus on Gotcha4Life, which is having an incredible impact on the community. “We wish him all the best and know he will always be a beloved member of the Triple M family.”

His fans and colleagues have also expressed their admiration and support on social media.

Sunrise meteorologist Sam Mac wrote: ‘Outstanding entries, Gus. You should be proud of everything you’ve achieved, particularly in the mental health space through Triple M. I’m so excited to see what’s next with @gotcha4life.’

Comedian Julia Morris chimed in: “Call me when you need some of that big laugh.” Balance jx,” while Married At First Sight star Duncan James added: “Well done mate, inspiration @gusworland.”

Gus’ time at Triple M included stints as a commentator on the station’s cricket broadcasts, a role he eagerly accepted.

He is also known for being best friends with Hollywood icon Hugh Jackman and the pair frequently discover his antics on Worland’s radio show.

In July, Jackman and his co-star Ryan Reynolds hilariously hijacked his popular Australian radio show during their promotion of Deadpool & Wolverine.

Australian actor Jackman, 55, was left disappointed when they couldn’t arrange a trip to Australia for his busy press schedule to see Marvel’s latest action movie.

But that didn’t stop him from hilariously surprising his 50-year-old best friend, Worland, live on his Triple M and LiSTNR radio show, The Rush Hour.

Gus and his co-host, former AFL star Jude Bolton, opened the airwaves to take calls from listeners, only for Wolverine star Hugh to chime in from the other end of the line.

The radio hosts were left heartbroken when Jackman took the call and joked that the only way to talk to Worland was to call him at his workplace.

Jackman was then asked who his best friend really is, as he and Reynolds, 47, became known for declaring themselves best friends during their promotional tour.

To reassure Worland, Jackman insisted, “I could say on camera that we’re best friends, but you know I don’t mean it.”

To which Worland replied: “I hope you don’t mean it; to be fair, I’m getting a little jealous.”

Jackman then got involved, insisting that he had only become friends with Reynolds because of his impressive bank balance.

He joked: ‘Gussy, I’m not shallow at all, but have you seen how much money Ryan has? It’s like another league!’

Worland and Jackman have been close friends since they first met at the age of five, when their teacher paired them up at Pymble Public School in the 1970s.

Their friendship has lasted more than five decades and the couple often enjoys nights out and vacations together.
