In a scary moment, Washington Spirit star Trinity Rodman was taken off the field in a wheelchair after falling to the ground in Friday night’s game against the Kansas City Current. Rodman went down in the 75th minute after contact with Kansas City’s Temwa Chawinga.
Rodman received treatment from technical staff on the sideline for several minutes, lying face down and holding her back. She attempted to walk to the bench with the help of two staff members before being wheeled into the locker room in a wheelchair.

Rodman later returned to the bench with an ice pack, a positive sign for the star forward. The Current dominated the match with a 3-0 victory.
After the game, Spirit coach Jonatan Giráldez said there was “No information” about Rodman’s injury, but confirmed it is related to his back. Giráldez said they will re-evaluate availability once the team returns to Washington.
Rodman’s agent, Mike Senkowski, said Saturday via The Washington Post Senkowski said Rodman had suffered a “severe back spasm.” Rodman was “still in a lot of pain,” but that he was “hopeful that he had avoided a very serious injury,” according to the Post.
Rodman has been dealing with back spasms since his rookie season in 2021, meaning the contact with Chawinga was likely incidental to the injury.
Both Spirit and Current, who currently sit second and third in the league, have secured a spot in the NWSL playoffs, with Kansas City securing their spot with Friday’s win and Washington secures its spot in the postseason Earlier this week.
But it would be a huge blow to the Spirit if Rodman were to miss any time: The 22-year-old forward is a key piece of Washington’s offense, with eight goals (tied for fourth in the NWSL) and six assists (tied for second).
