Tribeca Festival to Open With Sarajevo Doc ‘Kiss the Future,’ Close With ‘A Bronx Tale’ Anniversary

The 2023 Tribeca Festival has revealed opening and closing night selections and chapters, as well as more gala events.

The festival kicks off on Wednesday, June 7 with the North American premiere of the documentary Kiss the future, which follows underground musicians and creatives during the siege of Sarajevo and the 1997 U2 concert celebrating the liberation of the Bosnian capital. The film is produced by Matt Damon, Ben Affleck and Sarah Anthony.

“We are grateful to the people of Sarajevo and U2 for giving us the opportunity to help tell this special story,” Damon said in a statement. “While this event occurred nearly 30 years ago, we believe it has great relevance to today’s world, serving as a powerful reminder that human creativity can provide a powerful antidote to even the most horrifying situations.”

The festival closes on Saturday, June 17 with the 30th anniversary screening of Robert De Niro’s directorial debut A Bronx storyfollowed by a post-screening chat with De Niro, producer Jane Rosenthal, and writer and co-star Chazz Palminteri.

The centerpiece of the film is the Disney and Pixar premiere in New York Elementary, which takes place in Element City, where denizens of fire, water, air and earth live together. Directed by Peter Sohn, the film features the voices of Catherine O’Hara, Leah Lewis and Mamoudou Athie.

The festival will also feature world premiere gala screenings of documentaries about Carlos Santana (Carlos), Cyndi Lauper (Let the canary sing) and French Montana (For Khadija, executive produced by Drake and Diddy), featuring performances by each artist following the screening of their respective documentary. And Megan Thee Stallion will participate in a live conversation.

Our lineup features the best of soul, rock & roll, pop and hip-hop,” said Cara Cusumano, Tribeca Festival Director and Deputy Programmer. “We hope our audiences are inspired by art activism and excited by the exciting acts that accompany the screenings.”

The Tribeca Festival recently unveiled its audio storyline lineup, which includes 18 world premieres from independent and established narrative audio creators and live recordings from Pod Save AmericaSmartLess Medias Just Jack & Willwith Will & Grace alums Sean Hayes and Eric McCormack, Selective shorts with Roxane Gay and Modern love with Kim Cattrall.

And the festival has added new prize categories for audio stories.
