Calendar and venue of the triathlon in Paris 2024
First introduced to the Olympic Games six Games ago at Sydney 2000, the triathlon competition will take place in the heart of Paris in 2024.
The men’s individual race will take place on July 30, followed by the women’s event on July 31 and the mixed relay on August 5.
Each will start on a pontoon on the Seine River, under the Pont Alexandre III bridge, for the swimming section.
Athletes will then follow a route that takes in the iconic sites of the city’s historic centre, including the Champs-Élysées, in the cycling and pedestrian stages.
There has been controversy in the run-up to the Games around the quality of water in the Seine, with the Paris 2024 president saying in April that swimming legs could be postponed whether heavy rains increase pollution levels before the events.
What does triathlon involve and what medals can be won at Paris 2024?
The men’s and women’s individual events are contested as straight medal races, continuously timed with transition areas for clothing and equipment changes after the swimming and cycling stages.
The Olympic triathlon distances for both men and women are as follows:
-
1500m swim
-
40 km cycle
-
10 km race
In the mixed relay, a team of two men and two women competes in a short track triathlon.
Each nation is ranked man-woman-man-woman, and each athlete will touch the hand of their next teammate after completing a course that includes:
-
300m swim
-
5.8 km cycle
-
1.8 km run
Team GB’s triathlon medal hopes at Paris 2024
Great Britain is the most successful triathlon nation at the Olympic Games.
GB have won three golds, including victory in the inaugural mixed relay event at the Tokyo Games, when Jess Learmonth, Jonny Brownlee, Georgia Taylor-Brown and Alex Yee triumphed.
Taylor-Brown and Yee won individual silvers in Tokyo.
Yee and Potter, who became world champions last year, were the first British triathletes selected for Paris in November.
The final British triathlon team will be confirmed on June 10, with a total of three women and two men included.
