“With damaging rain, storms and winds forecast this weekend, NSW SES urges communities to be prepared for potential flash flooding and continued significant river flooding in many of the state’s watersheds,” the SES said in a statement on Saturday.

“A large area of ​​the Midwest continues to be inundated by floodwater spilling onto farmland and the Lachlan River is likely to remain at significant levels through the weekend.

“Downstream, extensive flooding is occurring in Condobolin and we have asked the community to prepare for evacuation and/or isolation.”

Forbes Mayor Phyllis Miller told ABC rapid damage assessments would begin Saturday, so cleanup could do so as well.

“We know our cities, we know what we need,” Miller said Saturday. “The people at Forbes are resilient. Here we are very tough and we help each other. I think we’ll be fine.”

Deputy Commissioner Sean Kearns of the NSW State Emergency Service said the impacts of the flooding are expected to linger for “weeks, even months, as this water works its way downstream through various basins. fluvial”.

“We urge communities to remain vigilant: do not enter floodwaters and follow advice provided by emergency services,” Kearns said.

The SES carried out nine flood rescues in the 24 hours to 4:00 pm Saturday and received 256 calls for help. Currently, more than 70 NSW local government areas are subject to disaster declarations, with 23 emergency warnings in force.

Prime Minister Dominic Perrottet has told communities to prepare for more chaos, with new storms looming in the south-east of the state over the weekend.


Aid payments for affected farmers were increased on Friday and caravans will soon be brought in to temporarily rehouse evacuees from Eugowra.

“We will put people back in their housing blocks, even if their home is not habitable, in a caravan if they want to,” said Emergency Services Minister Steph Cooke.

Significant flooding is expected to continue along several river systems, including the Lachlan, Darling, and Murrumbidgee, affecting cities including Forbes and Condobolin in the Midwest, Bourke in the Northwest, and the Riverina town of Hay.

Prolonged major flooding in Forbes is not expected to subside until early next week.

Downstream, Condobolin and Euabalong are bracing for the worst after the Lachlan River surpassed records set there in 1952.
